Long Clawson Dairy history

Long Clawson Dairy is a traditional British cheese producer, based in the small village of Long Clawson in Leicestershire. The company was founded in 1911 by Thomas Hoe Stevenson, who was running Mount Pleasant Farm near Melton Mowbray. Stevenson's two sisters produced Stilton cheese in a room adjoining the main farmhouse. To ensure the continued production of this special cheese, Stevenson canvassed local farmers for their opinions on developing a dairy. He soon found 11 partners, and together they purchased an old empty pub, The Royal Oak, which became the head office of Long Clawson Dairy and remains so to this day. The company has been a farming co-operative since its formation, supporting local farms for over 100 years.

Expansion was rapid in the early years, and a second dairy was constructed two miles away at Hose. However, the onset of World War I created problems for the dairy, including restricted import of cereals and oil seeds for cattle feed and staff enlistment. Nonetheless, Long Clawson Dairy persevered, and when demand for milk increased during the war, they began supplying milk to London.

In the 1920s, many dairies faced financial ruin due to declining milk prices, and were bought out by the dominant United Dairies. Long Clawson Dairy, however, decided to remain independent, a bold move that allowed them to maintain their identity. Despite new hygiene and technological advances, the dairy recorded a loss in 1926 but recovered by 1929 with the introduction of smaller English cheeses and new staff.

The Great Depression in the 1930s had a significant impact on the dairy industry, as cheese became a luxury that many families could not afford. Long Clawson Dairy recorded losses during this period, and employees were forced to work longer hours and accept lower wages. The farmers' co-operative reluctantly offered the business for sale in 1935, but it survived when a private buyer could not be found.

During World War II, Long Clawson Dairy, like many other dairies, was ordered to stop production of Stilton cheese in 1939. However, they were able to remain in operation by investing in new equipment and techniques, allowing them to convert to Cheddar production.

In the 1950s, British cuisine became more adventurous, and Stilton cheese regained popularity as a staple on cheeseboards. Long Clawson Dairy prospered during this time, and their Blue Stilton won the Perpetual Challenge Cup for Best Stilton at the London Dairy Show in 1953.

The company continued to expand and innovate, launching its first blended cheeses in the 1960s and establishing a third dairy in Bottesford in the 1970s. In 1996, Stilton® was awarded a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, ensuring that any cheese bearing the Stilton name must be produced using milk from Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire.

Today, Long Clawson Dairy remains a thriving, farmer-owned cooperative, creating award-winning British cheese and supplying milk to over 16,000 customers.
