History of Chuck E. Cheese
Chuck E. Cheese was founded in 1977 by Nolan Bushnell, the co-founder of Atari. The first location, Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre, opened in San Jose, California, on May 17, 1977, and was the first family restaurant to integrate food with arcade games and animated entertainment. It was also the first interactive entertainment restaurant for families, bringing pizza, games and entertainment all under one roof.
Bushnell had the idea to combine pizza with entertainment after working as a games division manager at the Lagoon Amusement Park, where he learned about the business side of the entertainment industry. He initially tried to get a job at Disney but ended up working for Ampex Corp, a video equipment maker in Redwood City, California. There, he befriended Ted Dabney, and the pair began discussing the idea of starting a pizza parlour with Disney-esque entertainment. They visited local pizza parlours and scouted locations, and also saw Spacewar!, the world's first video game, which inspired them to create a cheaper version of the game that could be marketed at the consumer level. They founded Syzygy to market the game and, after it flopped, renamed their company Atari Inc.
After the success of their game Pong, Bushnell sold Atari to Warner Communications in 1976. As part of the sale contract, Warner agreed to fund the building of one restaurant featuring Bushnell's concept of animated entertainment. The first Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre was a 5,000-square-foot former brokerage building. The most unique aspect was the animatronic show – life-sized animatronic critters that were placed in faux picture frames around the showroom and entertained guests throughout the day. The restaurant was an immediate success, and improvements and innovations were continuously tested at the pilot store.
In 1984, Chuck E. Cheese filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by Brock Hotel Corporation, the parent company of competitor ShowBiz Pizza Place. The merger formed a new parent company, ShowBiz Pizza Time, Inc., and in 1990, all locations were renamed Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza. The name was shortened to Chuck E. Cheese's in 1994 and then to Chuck E. Cheese in 2019.
In 2012, CEC was struggling with decreasing revenue and ran a rebranding campaign, changing the Chuck E. Cheese mascot into a slimmer rock star mouse who plays electric guitar. In 2014, Apollo Global Management acquired CEC Entertainment, and in 2017, the company began piloting a new design concept at seven remodelled locations, branded as Chuck E. Cheese Pizzeria & Games. These locations feature more upscale decor, an open kitchen, and the "Play Pass" card system to replace arcade tokens. The animatronic stage show was replaced by a dance floor area, and these changes were intended to help the chain appeal to adults and encourage family dining.
