In 1981, the restaurant opened its first international franchise in Australia under the name Charlie Cheese's Pizza Playhouse. The same year, Pizza Time Theatre, Inc. also opened at least one restaurant in Hong Kong and Singapore, but these closed soon after due to the initial company's bankruptcy in 1984.

In 1994, nine years after the merger with ShowBiz Pizza Place, the first new international location opened in Lo Barnechea, Santiago, Chile. As of 2023, there are 13 locations in the country.

In 2001, the first location in Saudi Arabia was opened, followed by the United Arab Emirates in 2008, Jordan in 2019, Bahrain in 2021, Qatar in 2022, and Kuwait in 2024. There are also plans to expand to other countries, such as Egypt, Jamaica, and Guyana.

As of October 2024, CEC Entertainment owns and operates approximately 465 Chuck E. Cheese locations in the United States and Canada, with 96 franchised locations in the US, Puerto Rico, and 16 countries worldwide.

The restaurant's bankruptcy and merger

In 1984, Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, reporting a loss of $58 million in 1983. The chain was then acquired in 1985 by Brock Hotel Corporation, the parent company of competitor ShowBiz Pizza Place. This merger formed a new parent company, ShowBiz Pizza Time, Inc., which began unifying the two brands in 1990, renaming every location Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza. It was later shortened to Chuck E. Cheese's in 1994 and, finally, Chuck E. Cheese in 2019.

In 2020, CEC Entertainment, the parent company of Chuck E. Cheese, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection once again. The company emerged from bankruptcy with new leadership and freed from about $705 million in debt.

The COVID-19 pandemic was financially damaging to CEC Entertainment, with the company accumulating an estimated $1-2 billion in debt. In June 2020, CEC Entertainment filed for bankruptcy protection and, in December 2020, emerged from bankruptcy under the ownership of its lenders, led by Monarch Alternative Capital.
